The Autorização de Internação Hospitalar (AIH) is the instrument for recording and billing hospitalizations performed by Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS). It is issued by municipal or state health managers and has a 13-digit number that identifies the state of origin, year of competence, type of AIH, and a sequential number. AIH is fundamental for hospital billing with SUS and for bed control.
The AIH number consists of: state code (2 digits), year of competence (2 digits), AIH type (1 digit — 1 for normal, 5 for extended stay), sequential number (7 digits), and check digit (1 digit). The verifier is calculated by multiplying each digit by weights 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 2, 3, 4, and 5 (left to right), summing the products, and obtaining the remainder of division by 11.
SUS hospital billing systems, public health management platforms, hospitalization control systems, and DATASUS integrations need to process and validate AIH numbers. Developing and testing these applications without using real patient or hospitalization data is fundamental to protecting sensitive health information and complying with LGPD and CFM standards.
