How CNH Validation Works

What does the validator check?

The Help4Dev CNH validator checks whether the 2 check digits of a CNH number are mathematically correct by the modulus 11 algorithm. CNH has 9 base digits and 2 verifiers. The validator does not query Detran systems and does not check if the CNH is active, within the validity period, or belongs to a real driver. It is a purely algorithmic numerical format check.

When is a CNH considered invalid?

A CNH is invalid when: (1) it has a different number of digits than 11; (2) the check digits do not match the expected calculation by the modulus 11 algorithm with CNH-specific weights. The validator processes any 11-digit number and immediately reports whether it is mathematically valid or not.

Why validate CNH in development environments?

Vehicle rental systems, transportation apps, digital licensing platforms, and Detran systems need to validate CNH format before processing. Testing this validation requires both valid and invalid CNH examples.
