Understanding Vehicle Chassis (VIN) and the Generator Algorithm

What is the Chassis Number?

The chassis number (VIN — Vehicle Identification Number) is the unique identification code of each vehicle produced, standardized internationally by ISO 3779. It consists of 17 alphanumeric characters divided into three sections: WMI (3 characters — manufacturer), VDS (6 characters — vehicle description), and VIS (8 characters — production sequence). The ninth character is the check digit, calculated by the American VIN verification standard.

How does the generation algorithm work?

The generator creates the 17 characters following the VIN standard. The check digit (position 9) is calculated by assigning numeric values to each letter (A=1, B=2, ...) and multiplying by the specific weight of each position (8,7,6,5,4,3,2,10,0,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2). The sum of products is divided by 11 and the remainder defines the verifier — if the remainder is 10, the letter X is used. Forbidden letters in VIN (I, O, Q) are excluded.

Why use fictional Chassis numbers in development?

Insurance systems, vehicle auctions, resale platforms, Detran integrations, and fleet management systems need to work with chassis numbers. Developing and testing these applications requires valid chassis numbers for format and algorithm verification. Numbers generated by Help4Dev follow the international VIN standard and are safe for use in development environments.
